Christopher Worman, Executive Director Community Foundation Szekelyudvarhely, TechSoup manager
Christopher (Chris) Worman began working in civil society in the United States in 1999 with NGOs such as the Guthrie Theater and Special Olympics Minnesota where he served as Direct Marketing and Foundations Manager. In 2006, while training in development with Peace Corps Romania, Chris heard about the state of Romanian philanthropy and began mulling over mechanisms such as community foundations which might play a role in the re-establishment of social capital, encouraging active citizenship and local development. Since then, Chris has played an active role in the Romanian community foundation movement, starting Romania’s first community foundation in 2007 and helping build a national framework to encourage others. While the Foundation has rapidly grown into a leading actor in exploring the space for local philanthropy, with an annual budget of more than $250,000 and 5 staff, Chris keeps time for training through his Local Philanthropy Workshop and blog. In addition to work with the Foundation, Chris brought TechSoup Global into Romania in 2009. Nearly $5 million in support to civil society has since been delivered through this social enterprise and the organization continues to grow in all things related to civil society and IT&C. Randomly enough, Chris is also enjoys rural development (because it gets him out to the villages) and one of his favorite projects is a biogas social enterprise developed in 2008… He keeps busy.
